My love of a good podcast has been well documented. I think it started with no longer having colleagues. Since I’ve been a stay at home mom for a bit, that adult interaction has been missing. Podcasts filled the void a bit. Just listening to adults talk about topics and issues that are interesting is a win when spending chunks of time alone.
Still, with being home for the lockdown, I’ve had even more of an opportunity to check out some new pods. I spend a good amount of time in the kitchen because the kids are always hungry it seems. Something about distance learning caused them to grow an extra stomach, I’m sure of it. Cooking has become one of those times I like to listen to a good podcast. Another good time is when I’m cleaning. It’s either good music or a podcast to get me knocking those chores out!
I have found several that I’m loving right now. This post isn’t long enough for them all. So, I’m mixing in some of the new ones with some that I’ve been listening to for a while now.
I recently discovered, Truth Be Told and I’m so happy I did. The host of the show is from my hometown of Detroit. That has nothing to do with me listening, I just thought it was a fun fact. She dives in and has really thought provoking discussions. One of my faves was White World, Black Body. It was about big women (their words, not mine) and how they move in this world. The ladies interviewed talked about how being a big woman of color meant they were simultaneously unseen and in the way. I’m not a big woman but I am a tall woman (6’1″) so I could relate in various ways. It also gave me some things to think about that I hadn’t had to consider because I’m small. It’s always a plus to hear a different perspective.
The Stoop is so good. I subscribed a long time ago but hadn’t listened until recently. Now I feel like I have to play catch up and binge all the older episodes. One of the favorites I’ve heard so far is Black on Air. It talked about the complexities of being Black while working in the media. As someone who spent years in television newsrooms and studios… I get it!
The Love Hour is hosted by husband and wife team Kevonstage and MrsKevonstage. They are such a relatable couple! I nod my head in agreement with so much of what they talk about. Bonus points because I learn a lot too! I’ve sent a few of the episode links to my husband. This is one that couples can listen to together. It makes for great discussions during and afterward.
The Daily is my daily fix of what’s going on in the world. It’s a New York Times pod that gives about a 20 minute take on the big story of the day. The reporting is always really detailed and gives me something to think about. I’ve been trying to not plant myself in front of the TV for news and opting to get my fix from pods most of the time. This is one that’s become a go to for me. It’s one of those perfect podcasts for news nuggets. I start my day with this one.
Ratchet and Respectable is a podcast hosted by Demetria L. Lucas. She is such the homegirl in my head. She breaks down news of the week in a way that you would if you were talking to your girlfriends. It’s so incredibly relatable and real. She also throws in interviews with experts for a more in depth discussion on things. Her pod started out as pop culture focused. When the world went crazy, she shifted her focus because you really can’t NOT talk about all of the insane things happening right now.
That’s my current round up of podcasts. I’m sure I’ll find some more that I love. If you have suggestions of some I should check out, leave them in the comments.
Cam, may I humbly suggest the That’s Outrageous podcast, hosted by me & my co-worker, Crissy! ❤️
Absolutely! Will check it out. 🙂
