So Beyonce. Sigh. I posted on Facebook/Twitter yesterday that I don’t like her new song. It seems as if I’m not alone. I have posted on this blog before about Beyonce. I like her. She’s always been inspirational to me. She’s one of the celebs in my head when I am going after some of my goals. I was one of the few people on board when she released Girls (Run the World). I didn’t love it at first, but it grew on me. I say that to say, I really like her. I just don’t like her new song. I hope her new album won’t ALL be in this direction.
If you haven’t heard the song, it’s called “Bow Down”. She’s pretty much lashing out at all her competition and demanding “Bow Down B****es” over and over again. This is where she loses me. I understand some bravado. I understand maintaining that number one spot. I don’t understand being all about empowering women and then releasing this song. They don’t match.
Some people are disappointed because they think she should be sending a different message as a mother. I’ve heard others frustrated about how this song will translate to her young fans. For me, I started to feel frustrated with Beyonce when I saw her GQ cover.
For me, I think that she’s realized her main competition is Rihanna and she’s pulling out all the stops to gain ground. The thing is, she doesn’t HAVE to do any of this. She’s amazingly talented – period. No need to pose on the cover of a men’s magazine with half of your boobs hanging out. No need to jump on Instagram post random pictures of your life, no need to do a documentary to show that you are human.
Rihanna has this crazy popularity in part because she’s decided to kind of be an open book. She’s all over Instagran. She’s all over magazines and she says whatever she wants – politically correct or not. That’s her lane. Her fans love her for her openness and feel really connected to her.
Part of Beyonce’s allure was the mystery. She dated Jay-Z forever and married him while barely acknowledging that she knew him. They had a child whose face they successfully hid for over a year. You don’t see Beyonce hanging out. You don’t know who her friends are outside of Destiny’s Child. What you do know about Beyonce is that she’s a beast at what she does. She can sing. She can dance. She does them both well at the same time. She is a full on entertainer. I wish she would just be that.
You don’t have to yell “Bow Down”. Let your work do the yelling for you. Just continue to release hot music and deliver stellar performances. That is really all she needs to keep that crown firmly placed on her head.
That’s my three cents. I know other people see it differently. What’s your take?

I agree with you. No one has to bow down to her she is the queen and to say the B word I think it’s beneath her she stepped back to me. She is suppose to be about empowerment and now she talking this. I understand she needed to get things off her chest and I am not even mad at the beat of the song but to say bow down sounds to me like she is not humble. She is above all that mess.

It seems like she’s giving the hardcore fans what they want. Beyonce 24/7 with a dose of ego.
I was a bit shocked when I heard this song. I’ve always loved Beyonce and her music but this song will have to grow on me. The beat yes, the lyrics not so much! I hear Keysha Cole went in on her about this song. Maybe it won’t be a part of her new album. I still love B!!

I can see it both ways actaully. For her she always has to hear the publics opinion/ridicule about what we think about her and her success maybe it’s time for her to lash out and speak her mind, hence “bitch bow down” LOL
Even though I feel like she can say the “B” word, despite the age of her fans. Musicians and their social responsibility is completely up to them. Parents should be better monitoring what their children listen to really.
Now, on the other hand I agree and respect your opinion on how it’s just too much for her to even have to go there.
There’s a side to everything however I like the song…. and music is very subjective and it means what I want it to mean and sometimes I feel just like the words in the song in questions and I want to tell my naysayers “BOW the F DOWN!!!!!” LOL I just don’t have a few milli to lay the track down in the studio!

I don’t like thar song either and I’m a fan. I like her a lot. I think the magazine was fine, it didn’t bother me. She wanted to feel sexy, I say go for it. The documentary, it was nesscesary. I felt like I needed to know her a little better and now I feel like I do. I don’t feel like she’s competing with Rihana, she doesn’t need to. Rihana does too much for me too often. But that bow down mess, was just that, messy!

in an attempt to not write a rambling book on this one, i agree with GoodLooknOut. Beyonce is constantly scrutinized and typically just keeps her mouth shut. so why not make a song (and get paid in the process!) to tell people how you really feel? as far as being a mom and using profanity – sue me. it’s no reflection on my parenting skills at all. she’s an artist, a performer, and a real person who’s entitled to her opinions. she just happens to be under a microscope for the world to judge.

i am not a massive Beyonce’s fan but I don’t mind what she does and as you wrote her allure was her privacy but she is really going down hill for my thinking.

I personally have read many criticisms about the song. I for one happen to like it but I like a good hood beat so she had me at that. As far as the lyrics are concerned I just think it is an issue because it’s her. She had that mystery for so long and people just didn’t really know who she was. She was perceived as this classy lady who kept everything under wraps.
The documentary may have been her out and now she is feeling liberated. People have so much to say about her and her life. She can’t win either way so maybe she just went the route she felt was indeed her and low and behold. She owes no one anything. As someone said above if people are worried about her as a role model for their children then they need to parent. Role model is so subjective. She is a hard worker and made her dreams a reality. I think this is something that a role model would convey yet she said a bad word in a song, that is played on TV now and she is the root of all that is wrong.
I just wonder if Erykah Badu sang it would the discussion be, probably not because we see her as hood. I don’t too much like the words but being that I have a ratchet side I’ll bump it!

I love Bey and I truly do stand for her but I am not a huge fan of this song. I do like the beat but the lyrics lose me a bit. I think that people will always judge her harshly because she is the standard right now. No one can sing and dance (at the same damn time) like she does. Period. I can’t wait to hear her new album. I like it that she is starting to show more of herself, but then again I’m a fan. Her GQ cover (and her new Shape Magazine) didn’t bother me at all. She looks great! She’s a grown woman, mother and wife. Since when does that equate with not being sexy or completely covered and modest all the time? Let Bey live a little, LOL! She’s out here trying to get it and remind people why she’s number one and I for one ain’t mad at her.

I agree with what Mimi said. She’s held a tight lip for a long time after sustaining so much criticism over all of these years. I mean, I’d be pretty upset too, if someone said I had a fake pregnancy. Good grief!
I’m not totally excusing the language use. But yet and still…people can take you there sometimes, and I say that as a loving, Bible-believing Christian woman!
I don’t think she’s trying to compete with Rihanna at all. She’s put in too much work to have to do that, so why can’t this be a form of expression for her?
How does one song (a snippet, really) cancel out her body of work and the things that she has stood for? I’ll close this novel of a comment by saying that I’ve learned to wait to hear more from the artist before I make a final call on how I feel about their work. I was hard on her “4” album when it was released, but after listening to it and getting a better understanding of where she’s at in her life, I came to appreciate it more. I’ll do the same this one.

I haven’t heard the song and unless it comes on the radio I don’t plan to scout it out to listen to it. I’ma Beyonce fan and your opinion (as well as others) make me fear that it will turn me off to her.
As far as her GQ cover- I’m still on the fence about it. I’m sure there are other moms who have posed equally nude or maybe even more (of course I can’t think of any examples) but what I can’t figure out is why “we” scrutinize her so much? Yes, she’s int he spotlight but I feel like people are harder on her than most other celebs. It could just be me because I’ma fan though.

I’m with Mimi and Amber on this one. I don’t feel Beyonce feels threatened by Rihanna. I think that people and the media want to put out the vibe that she is. After all drama sells so why not stir some up right?!
At the end of the day she’s a grown woman and her target fan base has changed. She’s not making music for the teens like she was when she in Destiny’s Child. She’s making and writing songs that GROWN people with grown up problems can relate on some level.
Not going to lie, I’m not at all a fan or user of the B word. However, I do use a few other choice words in my head when I’m on the verge of being pissed off to no return. She’s an artist and I’ve enjoyed watching her grow musically and can’t wait to see where she ends up. I’m sure she’ll be singing something totally different next year.
As for her GQ cover, she’s already said that she did to prove a point that just because she’s a mom now doesn’t mean she’s any less sexier than a childless woman. And I can feel her on that. Being a mom is not the end all when it comes to sexiness.

Today, I went to the beachfront with my kids.
