It’s been a minute since I’ve blogged. Life just keeps moving and I’ve been doing other things and haven’t shown up in this space like I used to. To get back in the swing of things, I decided to a one of my favorite types of posts. It’s a good way for me to catch up with you by telling you what I’ve been up to.
Watching – Family Reunion
This show hits home for me in many ways. The couple in the show decide to move from Seattle to Georgia to raise their kids around their family and black culture. These are all things that have been discussed in my family. My husband and I have talked about how different our lives would be if we had any family around. It’s tough to raise kids no where near anyone related to them. They certainly aren’t growing up like I did, with cousins as playmates.
As far as black culture goes, it can be a challenge to find black folks in SoCal. It was definitely easier when we lived in Los Angeles! Living in Orange County, we have to make a concerted effort to find black folks. We’ve managed to create a community. I just wish it required less effort. Family Reunion resonated with us in a big way. We binged all the episodes over two nights. The kids have watched a few too. My daughter calls it the “Black Family Magic” show!
Reading – I’m currently making my way through What Doesn’t Kill You Makes You Blacker. I’ve read about 30 books this year. Here’s a list of what I’ve been reading.
Listening – Brown Skin Girl by Beyonce and Nights Over Egypt by the Jones Girls has kind of taken over my summer playlist. My daughter requests Brown Skin Girl on a regular basis. She LOVES it. That makes my heart happy. As for Nights Over Egypt, I heard it in She’s Gotta Have It and remembered how much I love that song. It just feels good.
Making – The goal is to make some recipes from Carla Jones Soul Food and Thug Kitchen cookbooks. I don’t love cooking. We gotta eat, so I cook. Shrug. I’m trying to infuse a little excitement in my kitchen by cracking open these cookbooks I’ve had for several months. We’ll see how it goes.
Planning – I’m planning to write more chapters in this book I’ve been working on for a few months. I haven’t made nearly the amount of progress that I wanted to.
Feeling – Summer is coming to a close and I’m a little sad. I’m definitely excited for a new school year and the time I’ll get back to focus on projects.
So let’s catch up! What have you been up to?
Love this catch up! I love doing these too! I’ll work on one before the end of the year!
