What is your big, outrageous dream? Have you told anyone about it? Is it something you work on at all? Do you think about it constantly but you’re too nervous to make a move on it? I have a big dream that keeps playing in my brain. There are times that I’m all in on it and then there are days that I feel totally stalled. It’s those times that frustrate me most. It’s also in those times that someone eventually comes along and gives me a boost. The boost could be a compliment on the work I do and the strides I’ve made. Those boosts feel good. Sometimes they even feel necessary.

When it comes to our dream and what motivates us, it's always nice to get a boost of encouragement right when you need it. Sometimes, that comes from another person. I wonder though, is holding to to our motivation like holding on to our happiness - our choice.I was thinking about a friend of mine this morning who is having a hard time finding support when it comes to her dreams. Her dream is BIG, BOLD and like WHOA. So of course she’s being challenged with people who feel like it’s too big. It’s too much. We all know that it can be hard to fight through that when those people are closest to you. Recently she had a moment, an encounter that gave her some reassurance that she was on the right track.

Talking to her got me to thinking. Do we put too much value in validation? You know those moments that you’re working so hard toward something. You take two steps forward and then what feels like 20 steps back. It can make you wonder if that thing you’re working so hard to get is even for you. Is it worth it? Should you just stop? Give up and move on to something else.

What you’re doing matters

Then something happens. Someone out of the blue compliments you on something related to that work. Their compliment lets you know that someone sees you. You’re not just working in a vacuum and what you’re doing matters. That validation can change everything for you. It can be just the push you need to keep moving forward. It can feel like confirmation that you shouldn’t give up and you’re on the right track. The question is why? Why do we sometimes feel like we need those moments to help us stay motivated?

It kind of feels like needing something to happen for us to be happy. We all know happiness is a choice. It’s our choice. So why can it be so hard to just decide to be happy – no matter what? I know…life. Still, why look for something or someone to make you happy? It’s giving something or someone outside of yourself too much control.

The same can be said for motivation. Is letting that acknowledgement from someone else be your motivator giving them too much power? How hard would it be to stay motivated regardless of what’s happening? Even typing that I had to take a break and breathe because I know all too well that it’s hard to maintain motivation. In reality though, it’s like waiting for someone else to change the channel, when you’re the one holding the remote. Ouch!

You can do hard things

After thinking for a bit about that conversation with my friend, I was reminded to stay motivated no matter what. In those times where it feels like you’re invisible and no one sees your efforts – stay motivated. If what you’re working on is something you truly believe in – stay motivated. The accolades are nice. Definitely. But don’t wait on those acknowledgements to remember that you’re awesome. You can do what it is you are working toward. It can definitely be hard. But, my dear, you can do hard things.

  1. This is an excellent post to motivate everyone to keep going even when things are not going according to plan.Sometimes, when there’re no results, it’s so tempting to take the easy way out.So thanks for this.

  2. This post is really inspiring. There are times that I feel like my life has turned routinary. The most uplifting thing happened to me the other day when my husband and my kids just said, “Thank you for all that you do for this family.” Wow. I was like in a dream! I guess being appreciated for what you do is a big motivation for you to step out of the shell and do more.
