We all have many titles and wear many hats. The words wife, mom, business owner, employee, friend, etc are just a few. Mom in itself represents a whole other list of roles like nurse, therapist, tutor and so on. So many roles. So much around you that you can’t control. The thing is, we all feel better when there is some measure of control. When everything around you is spinning like a tornado and the world feels like a dumpster fire – control feels… essential.
In these moments, the best thing we can do is focus. Give our focus to the things we can control. That may not be a long list but it’s something. It could be as simple as the meal plan for the week or the to do list for a small project.
Some other things to consider are stretching, meditating and exercising. All of these things help to keep you focused and grounded. While many of us say we’ll do this, in the chaos of life, it doesn’t happen. What I’ve found that works is putting it on your calendar and commit. If it’s important to you, write it down. If it’s not written down, in many cases, it’s not real. Whether we’re talking people, things or activities that are important to you – pencil it in. You’ll be more likely to make time and follow through.
Another thing I love to make time for are podcasts. I talk about them a lot because I love them so much. I follow news as well as pop culture and historic podcasts. There really is something for everyone. They are great to get your mind off things and focus on something more light and carefree when things are rough. They allow you to quiet your mind and escape and/or learn something new. It allows you to take time for yourself. I tend to listen while I’m out running errands or cooking.
Lastly, show yourself some love and don’t be too hard on yourself. There is a lot going on in the world and it’s really be a wild couple of years. You are not going to be able to do it all or be all for everyone. Listen to yourself and follow your gut on what’s important to you.
