At the top of the year, I wrote a post about 2020 being the year of clear vision. And for a while now it’s felt more like 2020 had been cancelled. I had this optimism and plans for the year. I was excited for what lie ahead. Once COVID-19 hit, I have to admit, I started to question that. I was bogged down with all that wasn’t happening. From the kids school year being cut short, to the events and activities we had planned – all cancelled. It’s been a ride to say to the least.

Is 2020 cancelled? I certainly thought so. Now, it seems the year of clear vision is coming through. I can't say it's in the way the any of us expected.

When the loss of life started to pile up and we were restricted to being at home and then wearing masks everywhere – it became heavier. Then to insert the ever present conversation of racism with the death of George Floyd. I say ever present because racism has never been something that I didn’t talk about, deal with, live with. It’s not something I can avoid. So why now? Why did the death of George Floyd light the match that literally set the world on fire?

The Perfect Storm

I have an idea. This pandemic created the perfect opportunity for people to focus on what’s been happening to the black community not only in the US but around the world. It created the opportunity because we had everything cancelled. All distractions were literally taken away. There are no sports, no concerts and no movies. We’ve all been inside and watching television. We’ve been locked into the news. Everything outside was shut off and we really got to see what happens in the black community everyday. It wasn’t something you could easily ignore or turn away from. The protests that have followed are an outpouring of years centuries of frustration and definitely rage.

I’m encouraged because there is such a diverse set of people hitting the streets for protests around the WORLD. I really hope this is the start of huge changes in this country and beyond. It’s past due. At the beginning of the year, I thought that 2020 would be the year of clear vision. Along the way, I’ve had my doubts.

Seeing Clearly

Today, though, I am convinced 2020 isn’t cancelled. It is absolutely the year of clear vision. It’s proving to be the year that we’ve been able to see clearly what’s really important. We’ve been more connected to our family and those that mean the most to us. We’re also becoming more connected to humanity and realizing, finally, that an even playing field doesn’t exist.

While I’m not sure what took so long for so many people to get on board, I’m cautiously hopeful. Cautious, because, we’ve been let down many times. Hopeful, because this is a whole other kind of generation. Some old divisions have been dissolved. Ways of thinking have changed a bit. We are living in a different time. Thank you 2020, for giving us a clear vision. Here’s hoping we do something about what we’ve seen.

  1. Thank you for sharing your thoughts. I agree with you on this year and am hopefully that the rest of the year and onward will be a constant push for effective change.

  2. Amen! This truly has been the year for clear vision. I’ve battled within myself about tackling this topic on my blog. You’ve done a great job at expressing how many of us feel right now. My Hubby and I started watching 13th last night on Netflix (eye-opening and heartbreaking at the same time), and I’ve been reading White Fragility by Robin DiAngelo (excellent book). It’s sad that it’s taken so long for people to wake up, but I’m glad they are, and I hope change really does happen. Thank you for sharing your heart. ♥
