Mother’s Day is almost here and I’ve been seeing stuff everywhere with people talking abut their moms. I have been thinking about what I’d like to say about my mom for the last week or so. There’s so much I could say, but it’d be too long to read. I decided to focus on one question. I asked myself what one thing my mom taught me that has stuck with me? It was so hard to choose just one, but here’s what I came up with:

When it comes to my mom, I think there are many things that make her awesome. When I was a child she made sure that I knew that I mattered, that my feelings and thoughts mattered. Being raised that way caused me to care more about the feelings of others. That’s something I definitely carry on with my son. I think it’s important to remember that kids are people, albeit little ones. Their feelings matter. I’m constantly asking my son for his thoughts on things that happen throughout his day. The way we treat kids when they’re growing up shapes so much of who they become. I’m so grateful that my mom felt this way and raised me accordingly.

I raised the same question on Facebook and Twitter. I loved the responses I got. There were over twenty! I randomly chose a few.

Kalani C. “Don’t give up what you want most for what you want in the moment.”

Rachael T. “You get more flies with honey than vinegar.”

Trina B. “Some people come into your life as blessings, others as lessons.”

@KrissyAlways “Teach people how to treat you.”

Shajuan I. “Closed mouths don’t get fed”

Rochelle C. “DO NOTHINGS: stay away from them and don’t be one.”

Shahara W. “Don’t worry if someone tells you no, they can’t eat you so there’s nothing to be afraid of.”

Heidi S. “Consider the other person’s side before you get angry or criticize them. They may be struggling with pain you don’t know about.”

Now, your turn! What’s one thing your mom taught you that’s stuck with you?

  1. I love them all I really like the last one people have anger that is sometimes not directed towards you they just have a lot going on I consider that when it comes to certain things. My mom always told me to trust no one but God.

  2. I really enjoyed this post. Let me see…my mom taught me alot without saying a word. My mom did say alot but I watched her so much, I learned from her actions what to do and what NOT to do.

  3. Never date a boy who will keep you out last. Because “ain’t nothing open after 12 but legs and motels.” This might be TMI but she was right.

  4. “they may be struggling with pain you don’t know about” – that is a hard lesson to learn but it is so true. We always want to take people’s actions on as if they were intended for us but more often that not people hurt our feelings simply because they are too busy thinking about their own stuff to even realize how their actions effect you. Once you get over the “it was intentional” thing, life gets a lot easier.
