Lately, I’ve been really into taking walks. It started because I realized I wasn’t getting in enough steps. I spend a ton of time at my desk. So a stroll through the neighborhood is my way of getting in some more steps. I even signed up for a 5k in my efforts to keep moving.
When I’m out on walks, I always turn on some music or a podcast. That’s what keeps my focus as I get the miles in. Also, good music does WONDERS for making it a workout instead of a leisurely stroll. Here’s what I’ve noticed, I’m so focused on the walk that I’m just moving along and not seeing all the beauty around me. Once I decided to be more present and in the moment, I was pleasantly surprised. There is a lot of beauty to be seen.
A Reason to Stroll
Maybe it’s just around here, but life is life-ing lately. There’s never a dull moment and always so much going on. With the start of the new school year, life has really picked up and gotten busier. It’s so busy that it can make anyone feel like you’re on life’s hamster wheel and ready to step off. Life can be so hard that we need to look for the soft parts. That’s exactly what it feels like when I do something so simple as taking a walk where I’m present and open to what’s around me.
Have you ever seen a rainbow in a cloud? I hadn’t either and I was in awe. When was the last time you’ve just been in awe of something? Something so simple at that. I realized I needed to look up and look around a lot more. I have to be intentionally present. Since then, I’ve noticed that I’m more engaged and taking in what’s around me.
As a writer, a good walk is not only good for my mental health it also gets my creative juices flowing. I have the best ideas while I’m strolling. It only makes sense. Any time spent out in nature really gives us a chance to clear our minds and open up to more ideas and creativity. Instead of tuning out your environment tune in to it and allow yourself to be inspired.
