There are days. Those days that we are deep in a funk and need to shake it. On those days, I usually turn to music. Music is my thing and I can always find a song to get me right and lift my spirits. The situation may require a dance party or a full-on gospel-fueled praise party. Last year, I tested positive for COVID and that was a different funk. I ended up reading a ton of books. If you’ve been around here for a bit, that’s no surprise. I also ended up doing something I do less often, watching television.

I tend to pop in and out of the TV when I hear about a show that people can’t stop talking about. It piques my interest enough for me to want to check it out. My husband also gets me sucked into some shows. He’ll start watching something and love it. Then, he ropes me in and it becomes our show. This has been happening our whole relationship. When we were dating, our show was 24. Then later it became The Tudors.

Must See TV

That’s what happened when he was on a flight some time ago and watched a few episodes of See (AppleTV+). He wanted me to watch it and figured I’d like it. He wasn’t wrong. We re-watched the episodes he’d seen and then flew through the rest. I couldn’t wait for the next season. We watched the last two seasons recently and I’m sad it’s over.

Another that we watched together is The Last Days of Ptolemy Gray (Apple TV+). I had wanted to see this one just because I really like Samuel Jackson. He’s so good in this series. The fact that he’s in his 70s and they had to put makeup on him to make him look old is mind-blowing.

The Godfather of Harlem (MGM+) is another one of our shows. It’s based on true events and it’s such a good story. Forest Whitaker is the star of this show and he plays drug dealer Bumpy Johnson. I’m learning lots from this show. It was a wild time.

Fleishman Is In Trouble (Hulu) sucked me in while I was quarantining. I was tired of those four walls and this show got me through it. It follows a newly divorced father of two. He’s navigating the dating world and reconnecting with old friends who are also going through mid-life challenges. His ex-wife is also adding some drama to the story by seemingly abandoning their kids after dropping them off for a few nights and not coming back. The writing is really smart and feels real-life relatable.

Best Man: The Final Chapters (Peacock) was required viewing. I’m a fan of the movies and love these characters. I wasn’t sure about it being a limited series because I liked the movies so much that I didn’t know if it could be stretched out over a series. I was wrong. Once I started watching the series, I didn’t want it to end. I watched it slowly instead of binging it on purpose. So good!

A couple of years ago, someone suggested I read Kindred (FX) by Octavia Butler. I did and I loved it. It was an awesome story that enraged me at times but really struck a chord in the best way. So when I heard that the book was being made into a series, I knew I had to watch it. I really like the series. I nearly binged the whole thing. I’m sad that it won’t be coming back for a second season. The last episode ended on a real cliffhanger and I was looking forward to more.

What have you been watching lately?
